Cohen's work expresses her subconscious evaluation of the world around her, it is in effect a visual representation of her contemplations about life and its ever changing nature. Cohen believes that every action, article or situation that we encounter as we walk through life, complex or simple, awakens a reaction inside of us. Those cumulative personal reactions she experiences give genesis to her interpretations about life through two artistic mediums.
In this way, Cohen sees her journey as an artist as a metaphor for the human experience: She is in a constant state of evolution and is constantly evaluating that evolution itself in her art. She believes the most central theme that appears through her creative process is the theme of change, movement from one stage to the next, progression. As she progresses simultaneously through both the human and artist experiences, she believes she will continue to have cryptic messages delivered to her through her painting which she will persist to contemplate through her detailed work with metals.
Cohen feels a strong connect between the explosive spontaneity of her painting and the unpredictability of life itself. When she begins the painting process she faces the bare canvas with a cathartic message from deep within her, releasing highly intuitive and intimate energy. Believing that through each whimsical painting experience she is obtaining a glimpse at her innermost person, she later analyses the spontaneous strokes and identifies connectors within them to her conscious interpretations of the world around her. In an effort to sharpen the communication between her work and her audience, she completes each canvas by artistically underscoring the enigmatic messages in her paintings.
Cohen sees the enigmatic messages that emerge through her paintings as a sort of cryptic language that appears in the form of reoccurring symbols. She identifies these hidden symbols as a type of "spiritual alphabet" that comes from within, spelling out subconscious messages from deep within her. A different symbol appears in each series of her paintings. Once she has fulfilled a series, it is as though the enigmatic message sent from deep within her has been fully realized.
While the spontaneous artistic experience persists in her painting, Cohen further unpacks the esoteric messages she received in her other artistic medium: jewelry. Cohen's work with metals stands in stark contrast to her painting, offering her a highly controlled and calculated means of expression. She often engages one strong cryptic message or symbol derived from her painting as an inspiration for a series of jewelry design.
Cohen views the preciseness of jewelry creation as a way to deepen her contemplation of the symbols and signs that are revealed to her in her paintings. The process of architecting jewelry enables her to materialize the cryptic messages she receives during her highly subconscious painting process. She sees the highly contrasting mediums of painting and jewelry creation as a means to obtain a zen-like balance as an artist.
